بسیاری بر این گمان هستند که از آنجایی که آزمون آیلتس آزمونی است که توسط شورای فرهنگی بریتانیا (British Council) و بخش ارزیابی زبان انگلیسی دانشگاه کمبریج انگلستان مدیریت می‌شود، صحبت کردن با لهجه انگلیسی در بخش گفتاری (speaking) این آزمون بر لهجه امریکایی برتری دارد و منجر به کسب نمره بالاتر در بخش Speaking آزمون آیلتس می‌شود.

حال این سوال مطرح می‌شود که اساسا آیا در آزمون آیلتس لهجه اهمیت دارد؟
پاسخ صریح به این سوال این است که اساسا لهجه هیچ اهمیتی در آزمون آیلتس ندارد و در حقیقت نمره شما به تلفظ، روانی و درستی سخن شما بستگی دارد.
در میان عوامل تعیین کننده نمره اسپیکینگ در آزمون آیلتس معمولا زبان آموزان میان تاثیر “تلفظ” و تاثیر “لهجه” دچار اشتباه می‌شوند. لهجه شما میتواند انگلیسی، امریکایی، کانادایی، نیوزلندی، استرالیایی و یا یکی از ده‌ها لهجه موجود در زبان انگلیسی باشد ولی عامل موثر در نمره آزمون گفتاری آیلتس “تلفظ” صحیح است. فاکتورهایی که در آزمون آیلتس برای نمره دهی به تلفظ در نظر گرفته می‌شوند عبارتند از:
- تلفظ صحیح صداها
- بیان درست استرس کلمات
- بیان درست استرس جمله
- وزن (rhythm) صحیح
- زیر و بمی (intonation) صحیح صدا در جملات
