شاید یکی از تفاوت‌های مشهود بین زبان فارسی و انگلیسی استفاده از حرف تعریف معین (معرفه) باشد. در فارسی فقط برای اسامی غیر معرفه (نکره) از حرف تعریف (یای نکره) استفاده می‌شود از این رو شاید استفاده از حرف تعریف معین در عین سادگی با اندکی سردرگمی همراه باشد. در زبان انگلیسی حرف تعریف معین (معرفه) نشان دهنده مشخص بودن اسم همراه آن برای شنونده است. این اسم ممکن است توسط گوینده از قبل ذکر شده باشد و یا اسمی منحصر به فرد باشد. حرف تعریف معرفه در زبان انگلیسی برای اسم‌های مفرد و جمع”The” است.
