پارافریز کردن به معنای بازنویسی جمله یا عبارتی با همان معنی اما با استفاده از کلمات متفاوت است.

پارافریز کردن مهارت مهمی برای بیشتر امتحانات انگلیسی از جمله آیلتس در بخش های ریدینگ، لیسنینگ و از همه مهم تر اسپیکینگ و رایتینگ است. به این مثال ساده توجه کنید:

بسیاری از زبان آموزان سعی در استفاده از این روش را دارند اما این روش، روش ساده‌ای نیست. دلیل این است که اگرچه زبان انگلیسی مترادف‌های بسیاری دارد اما معمولا این کلمات نمی‌توانند به جای هم استفاده شوند. بنابراین اگر بیش از حد از کلمات مترادف استفاده کنید، جمله از فرم اصلی خود خارج می‌شود. در این حالت جمله غیرقابل فهم می‌شود و  از نمره شما کسر خواهد شد.

برای افرادی که زبان اصلی آنها انگلیسی نیست، هر سه جمله معنای یکسانی دارد اما از نظر یک انگلیسی زبان، جمله‌ی دوم طبیعی و صحیح نیست. مشکل اول کلمه pick up  است. دقت کنید که pick up  نمی‌تواند جایگزین choose شود. پس این قسمت از جمله پارافریز اشتباه است. اشتباه دوم relevent است. درست است که دربعضی موارد این دو به جای هم استفاده می‌شوند ولی در این مثال معانی متفاوتی دارند. در عوض جمله سوم پارافریز بهتری است چون عبارات جایگزین با عبارات اصلی همخوانی دارند. 

در اینجا بهترین توصیه این است که از قانون صد در صد استفاده کنید. یعنی  فقط از مترادفی استفاده کنید که مطمئن هستید این کلمه‌ی جایگزین صد در صد همان معنا را می‌دهد. اگر مطمئن نیستید، از روش‌های دوم و سوم  استفاده کنید.

تغییر ترتیب جمله معمولا روش مطمئن‌تری است. گرچه تصمیم‌گیری برای اینکه جای کدام کلمات را تغییر دهیم همیشه آسان نیست. همچنین وقتی کلمه‌ای را جابجا می‌کنید معمولا نیاز دارید کلمات دیگری را نیز جابجا و کم یا اضافه کنید تا معنی جمله تغییر نکند و جمله از لحاظ گرامری صحیح باشد. اینجا دو پیشنهاد برای اینکه جای کلمات را بدون اشتباه تغییر دهید وجود دارد:

اگر جمله‌ی اصلی دو یا بیشتر از دو جمله واژه (Clause) دارد، ترتیب Clause ها را تغییر دهید.

استفاده از گرامر و ساختار متفاوت شاید دشوار به نظر برسد اما این روش بسیار ساده تر از دو روش قبلی است. به علاوه حتی اگر شما اشتباه گرامری هم داشته باشید، خواننده باز هم متوجه منظور شما خواهد شد. دو پیشنهاد برای تغییر ساختار بدون اشتباه:
